Designed around Auckland’s conditions
Auckland’s climate can grow an extraordinary range of plants, but its heavy clay soils can make choosing the right ones surprisingly difficult.
Winter rain can leave the ground wet and sticky, while warm summer periods can bake exposed clay hard. Plants that dislike poor drainage can struggle, even when the climate itself should suit them.
This plan is being designed specifically around those conditions.
Rather than trying to turn clay into something it isn't, the planting uses species that can cope with moisture-retentive soil while still creating the loose, layered character of a contemporary naturalistic garden.

The planting character
Expect generous foliage, flowering perennials and grasses woven together rather than planted as isolated specimens.
Soft flower spikes and seasonal colour will sit among stronger structural foliage, creating a garden that feels lush without becoming heavy or overly formal.
The different layers are designed to knit together as the garden matures, covering the soil and creating a planting community that changes naturally through the seasons.
