Beautiful planting for exposed coastal sites

A naturalistic planting plan designed for New Zealand gardens exposed to wind, salt and the demanding conditions that come with living near the coast.

The Coastal Garden combines resilient plants with grasses, soft flowering perennials and strong foliage to create a garden that can take the weather without looking tough or utilitarian.

Designed for: Exposed coastal gardens around New Zealand
Conditions: Full sun · Wind · Salt exposure
Style: Naturalistic · Textural · Resilient planting

Tough conditions don't need to mean a tough-looking garden

Coastal gardens are some of the most challenging places to plant.

Salt-laden winds, exposed sites and rapidly drying soils can rule out plants that perform perfectly well only a few kilometres inland.

This plan is being developed specifically around those conditions.

Rather than fighting the site, the design uses plants that respond naturally to wind and exposure — moving grasses, silvery foliage, low resilient planting and flowering perennials that create softness among stronger structural plants.

The planting character

Expect a garden full of movement.

Grasses and seed heads will catch the wind, while silvery foliage and resilient flowering plants create layers of texture and seasonal colour.

The aim is not to shelter the garden from its coastal setting, but to create planting that feels completely at home within it.
