A woodland-inspired naturalistic planting plan for areas that receive limited direct sun.
The Shade Garden uses foliage, texture and delicate seasonal flowers to create a rich, layered garden beneath trees, beside buildings or in those cooler parts of the garden where sun-loving perennials struggle.

Shade can be one of the most interesting places to plant
A shady garden doesn't need to become a collection of the same few foliage plants.
With the right combination of plants, shade can create some of the richest and most atmospheric planting in the garden.
This design is being developed around layers: lower groundcover, textured foliage, flowering perennials and taller structural plants working together to create the feeling of a natural woodland edge.
The result will rely less on constant flowers and more on contrast, form, texture and changes through the seasons.

The planting character
Think ferns unfolding through broad foliage, fine flowering stems appearing above groundcover and different shades of green creating depth even when little is in flower.
The design will feel calm, established and slightly wild - more woodland floor than traditional shade border.
